Today we are going to take a look at a hydration pack made by Deuter USA. The Superbike L is a cycling specific hydration/backpack that seems to be made fairly well. Deuter USA makes all kinds of outdoor bag related products including bags for bikes, hydration bags, backpacks, daypacks, and much more. There are a lot of hydration type bags today like Camelbak and Monsoon and many more trying to capture this market. The Superbike L has a 100 ounce reservoir and has 1450 cubic inches of storage volume. It can be used as a multi-sport hydration system but is made especially for cycling.

The first appearance is really good but it seems a little bulky and I don’t know about the weight and comfort just yet, but we shall see. I really like the rain flap that is tucked inside its own zippered flap which will really come in handy if caught in the rain. The bag has a superstrong bag system and a crush and leak-proof flexible water container. The filler cap is very wide and accepts ice cubes easily. It has a cover that fits over the mouth piece opening which is really great and valve on the mouth piece that has a integral spring mechanism that seals tightly and won’t leak or drip under pressure. The reservoir bag has a special integrated anti-microbial compound to reduce cleaning and maintenance. It is supposed to be a taste free reservoir system. The bag is actually made by Source Vagabond Systems which makes reservoirs for other companies as well. The SupeBike L Hydration Pack has the famous “Airstripes”. This air circulation system was developed especially for mountain bikers. It is made of two foam stripes and covered in mesh, which is highly breathable. This system allows for almost 80% of free air circulation across the bikers back. I will find out just how this works when I set out for a ride on a hot summer day. This system is supposed to create a chimney effect that promotes additional air movement. The back part of the bag has an anatomic design of the two “airstrips” that provides both comfort and stability. There are flexible aluminium stays in the “airstrips” that allow for curvature adjustment of the pack and allows for increased support. The hip belt is also the mesh material and will provide comfort on hot days and also give you the support that you made need.
Golite Fruita Cycling Hydration Pack
We are looking in detail at the Fruita hydration pack manufactured by Golite. Golite has been making all kinds of lightweight outdoor products since 1999. They make a great assortment of tents, hydration packs, sleeping bags, and some of the best outdoor active wear clothing you can find. We have previously reviewed their men’s Crank cycling shorts and were very impressed so much that Golite received our “Highly Recommended” award. Only five other companies have received this award to date. The Fruita hydration pack is made of Arrowhead Corura ripstop and has a 3 litre TPE Big Bore Tanker hydration system with the patented “Bite Me” valve made by TFO, a division of Nalgene. The Fruita pack has a good sternum strap and a very nice contoured adjustable web type belt. There is also three pockets on the rear one that is idea to put your helmet or cycling shoes in. A nice zippered security compartment is a great place to store your cell phone or other valuables. For safety, there is a reflective fabric patch and piping. It has a haul loop and elastic lock retainer strap along with a web type strap with side-release buckle for cinching helmet into rear sleeve. Now let’s take a more detailed look at the Golite Fruita.

I decided to check out the reservoir first and it was like most hydration reservoir that had your wide opening to fill. It is reported to have no plastic taste and is puncture resistant. I did notice that the fill spout did not have a built-in hand hold attached to it like some other manufactures. This gives you a little grip or a place to hold when you are tightening the cap. I believe this is an important feature because without it you will eventually tighten it so much that the plastic will rip around it. Golite might consider doing this in their future models. I have the Night colour pack which will coordinate with just about any colour bike and clothing you may have. They come in a nice yellow colour that they call Sun and a blue colour that they call Sea. All are very nice. The Fruita has a one-piece shoulder harness that is very comfortable in your neck and shoulders. It sports a mesh padded shoulder straps which is both light weight and breathable. The back is air mesh and padded to keep you cool.
